- I think you missed my point. I recognize that there are/have been
- groups of people who recognize the value of various products and
- remain committed to them for emotional reasons for extended periods
- of time despite the fact that they are no longer in production.
-
- This is definitely not the case with the Amiga. Its devoted
- followers have recognized its superiority when it was introduced and
- have been living in hope that development will continue, as has been
- promised. I state that they are "irrationally loyal" because they
- have been lead through a roller coaster of hopes, expectations and
- failed promises for the past half-decade.
-
- Personally, I am the owner of two Amiga systems and have been
- `hanging-on' for the last 5 years in the expectation that my
- favourite platform will regain its former respect in the world of
- computing. The current thread of hope lies in the talk of a Power
- PC CHRP compliant computer. Only informed Amiga users are aware of
- this because there continues to be silence in the form of corporate
- advertising. My own brother, who is an equally fanatical Mac user,
- and who also decries the unjustified market share of the
- IBM/Microsoft/Intel cartel, and who earns his living as a computer
- consultant, knows virtually nothing about the Amiga hardware or
- operating system. This situation is absurd. Either the Amiga is
- worthy of continued development or it is not. If it is, then it
- should be done in a truly committed fashion or not done at all. As
- I have said, currently there are alternatives that are not only
- cheaper, but superior in performance as well, with an easily
- obtainable supply of hardware and software. I am not advocating
- purchasing these alternatives. Quite to the contrary. I *want* to
- see the Amiga return in all its glory. But it will not unless the
- approach to marketing changes dramatically.
